Bali Temples & Historical Buildings

Temples and historic buildings in Bali provide an insight into the rich cultural legacy of the island. Some of the temples and buildings in Bali date back to the 11th century and are well known for their sculpture. The intricate wooden carvings are a treat to the senses.

The Bali word for temple is pura. Though most temples in Bali are nominally Hindu, there are many that are in deference to the spirits that are an integral part of Bali's religious beliefs. Temple celebrations are marked with much gaiety, dance and dramas with religion and Bali mythology as the central themes.

Some important temples and historic buildings in Bali include:

Besakih Temple (Mother Temple)

Also known as the "Mother Temple of Bali", the Besakih temple is perched on the lofty slopes of Mount Agung, at a height of 1,000 meters (3,000 feet). It is considered to be the holiest of all Hindu temples in Bali. Eighteen separate sanctuaries surround the three main temples, which are dedicated to the Hindu Trinity—Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The history of the temple dates back to megalithic times. The temple is believed to have been founded by Sri Markandeya, a Javanese priest who visited Bali around the 10th century AD.  The best time to see the temple and soak up the silence of the mesmerizingly beautiful surroundings is before 9 am in the morning for after that the tourist buses begin to arrive.

Pura Luhur (Uluwatu) Temple

Situated on the south westernmost precinct of Bali, the Pura Luhur Uluwatu is dedicated to the spirits of the sea. This architectural wonder, crafted in black coral rock, stands high on a cliff top at the edge of a plateau, 250 feet above the Indian Ocean. The traditional Kecak dance show during the sunset, the panoramic vistas and the sound of the surf breaks in the Indian Ocean together to provide an experience of a lifetime.

Ulu Danu

Equally beautiful is the Ulu Danu located in the mountain resort of Bratan, in Bedugul. This inspiring place of worship seems to rise out of waters of Lake Bratan.

Pura Tirta Empul (Temple of the holy water)

Built around a sacred spring, Tampak Siring, and its two bathing spots have been used by the Balinese for over a thousand years for good health and prosperity. The spring water is said to have curative properties and regular purifications ceremonies take place here.

Tanah Lot Temple

The royal Taman Ayun temple built in the 16th century, stands on top of a huge rock, surrounded by the sea and is considered to be one of Bali's most important sea temples. Poisonous sea snakes in the caves at the base of the rocky island are believed to be guardians of the temple and stand vigil against evil spirits.

Kertha Gosa Bali

Located about 40 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, these pavilions are famous for their ceiling murals. Painted in the traditional “Wayang” style, these murals depict the punishment in store for the miscreants, as also the rewards in store for those who have led a virtuous life.

Gunung Kawi Bali

A must visit to Bali are the 11th century tombs, carved out of the rock face of the gorge of the Pakerisan river. A steep descend through the scenic rice terrains leads to these impressive tombs were built to honour Anak Wungsu, the 11th century king.

Goa Gajah Bali

Goh Gajah Bali or the Elephant cave was an ancient monastery of both Hindu and Buddhist monks who came here to meditate. One of the main attractions is the entrance of the cave which is elaborately carved, and depicts a demon's mouth wide open. On either side are intricate carvings of leaves, animals and humans.
